In both the North and South, infantry regiments were organized similarly, with ten companies comprising each regiment, numbering 100 men each and supported by staff, drummers, and officers. The rigors of warfare often led to a reduction in strength through battle, disease, and desertion, resulting in fluctuating numbers for regiments.
