The battle for Gettysburg, which took place over the first three days of July in 1863, proved to be a turning point in the American Civil War, marking the high tide of the Confederacy. General Lee's Confederate army of North Virginia, fresh from a victory at Chancellorsville, faced off against General Meade's Army of the Potomac in the crossroads town of Gettysburg in what would become the deadliest battle of the entire conflict. The battle culminated in Pickett's Charge, a near-suicidal attack that led to the Confederate army's retreat.
