In 1776, General Washington had been preparing his defenses in New York since April. After leading British troops to victory in the Battle of Bunker Hill, General William Howe assumed command of all British forces in America. With precision previously unseen in British operations in North America, Howe planned an attack. His army, rejuvenated, set sail from Halifax and arrived in New York in late June, capturing Staten Island on July 2nd. Adding to their numbers, Clinton's flotilla returned from Charleston in August, followed by a 150-ship fleet from England carrying reinforcements, including the Foot Guards and regiments from the German Principalities, also known as "Hessians".
With an army now outnumbering the defenders, Howe ordered units to land on Long Island on August 22nd. Within three days, 20,000 British and allied troops were on Long Island, split into two wings. One half engaged the rebels with feint attacks, while the other half flanked the rebel left. The battle ended in a decisive defeat for the rebels, but Howe chose not to finish them off, believing they were trapped.
Prepare your army and plan your strategy for the new American War of Independence with the British Starter Army set, which includes 120 British line infantry, 30 Hessian mercenaries, 8 Woodland Indians, 1 cannon and crew, 1 mounted commander, and 1 casualty figure. This set also comes with full-color flag sheets.
Black Powder is a tabletop combat game that allows players to reenact pivotal battles in history, from the Napoleonic Wars to the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Plains Wars, and more. The game covers nearly 300 years of warfare, characterized by muskets and cannons powered by gunpowder.
In Black Powder, each brigade is led by a single commander, and players can move their entire brigade together or give individual units specific orders. Turns involve agreeing on verbal commands and then moving troops based on those commands and dice rolls.
Designed to be played on large tabletops, such as pool tables, Black Powder accommodates multiplayer games with as many people as desired. It was originally created as a club game, with standard movement distances of 12 inches for infantry and 18 inches for cavalry. Players will need a measuring tape as one is not included.
Enjoy the process of building, painting, and playing with the models in the British Starter Army set, as the recreation of historical battles comes to life on the tabletop.
