Originally designed to replace the US military's portee gun in an anti-tank role, the M8 Greyhound was quickly repurposed once it became apparent that its performance against German armor was lacking. Serving as a popular and successful armored car for both American and British armies during the war, the M8 Greyhound was manned by a crew of four and armed with a 37mm gun, a co-axial .30 cal, and some crews even added a .50 cal on the roof for anti-aircraft and local defense. Despite its speed - earning it the British name "Greyhound" - capable of reaching 55mph on good roads, it was known to get stuck in mud. Its armor was able to withstand small arms fire, making it ideal for scouting enemy lines when used in pairs to support each other in a leap-frog fashion during an advance or retreat.
Replacing the armored turret with a fixed, open fighting compartment, the M20 scout car was primarily used as a command vehicle. Sacrificing the main gun for increased radio capability, it also carried a portable Bazooka for additional anti-armor firepower. In contrast to other nations, the US only developed one type of chassis for reconnaissance, initially intended for tank destroyer units but eventually issued mainly to cavalry squadrons. The M20 utility car was also developed alongside the M8, serving as a command variant in many cases.
Introduced in Italy in late 1943, the cavalry squadrons faced their first combat experiences on the roads to Rome. These squadrons provided tactical commanders with a unique blend of speed and firepower, becoming the core of small, specialized forces consisting of engineers, tank destroyers, or self-propelled artillery units depending on the mission. This kit allows you to construct both the M8 with its recognizable turret and 37mm gun, as well as the M20 utility car. In total, the kit includes three vehicles. The models come unassembled and unpainted.
Included in the kit are three plastic Bolt Action vehicles, all of which are unpainted and require assembly. Bolt Action provides the rules needed to recreate the major battles of World War II on your tabletop. This project was a collaboration between Warlord Games and Osprey Publishing, with veteran game designers Alessio Cavatore and Rick Priestley at the helm.
