Throughout history, in many civil wars, both sides were equipped in a similar fashion, with the color of their uniforms and the flags they fought under serving as distinguishing features. This pattern was evident in the American Civil War, where the forces of the Union and the Confederacy were no exception. Miniatures of soldiers advancing with their firearms in a ‘right shoulder shift’ can be painted as either a Union or Confederate regiment. Clad in dark blue tunics, light blue trousers, and armed with percussion rifles, Union soldiers learned to maneuver and march long distances to engage in battle. While early regiments varied in quality, by the war’s end they had become a tough and proficient fighting force, capable of facing their Confederate counterparts.

Confederate regiments, on the other hand, were comprised of resilient soldiers accustomed to hardships and skilled in the use of firearms. Despite being frequently under-equipped, poorly fed, and armed, they prevailed against their northern foes with weapons often taken from Federal prisoners or purchased privately. Southern troops, though appearing ragtag, were known for their quick and terrifying charges, often accompanied by the eerie ‘Rebel Yell’ to unsettle their Union adversaries. The box set includes 24 Warlord resin figures, plastic bases, MDF Snake Fence scenery, cap badge decal sheet, and full-color flag sheets for both Union and Confederate troops.

From the Napoleonic Wars to the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Plains Wars, and various conflicts in between, Black Powder encompasses almost 300 years of history defined by musket and cannon warfare fueled by gunpowder. In this tabletop combat game developed by Warlord Games, players can reenact pivotal battles using dice, troops, and rules.

Each brigade is under the command of a single leader, giving players the option to move the entire brigade at once or assign individual units specific orders. Verbal commands are agreed upon between players each turn, with movements determined by both verbal instructions and dice rolls. Designed for play on large tabletops like a pool table, the game can be enjoyed by multiple players and was originally created as a club game. Infantry typically move 12 inches, while cavalry move 18 inches per turn, necessitating the use of a measuring tape (not included).
