Throughout history, in many civil wars, both sides were often equipped in a similar fashion, with the color of their uniforms and flags distinguishing them. This was no different in the American Civil War between the Union and Confederacy. These miniatures, depicting soldiers in firing line formation, can be painted as either Union or Confederate regiments. Union soldiers wore dark blue tunics, light blue trousers, and carried percussion rifles. They were trained in maneuvering and marching long distances to engage in battle. Initially, Union regiments varied in quality, with few having prior drilling experience or active service experience. However, by the end of the war, they had become a tough and efficient fighting force, equal to their adversary, ‘Johnny Reb’.
Confederate regiments were also resilient, with many soldiers accustomed to hardship and skilled in firearm use. Despite being poorly equipped, fed, and armed in comparison to their Union counterparts, they were resourceful, often relying on equipment taken from Federal prisoners or purchased privately. Although some preferred Enfield rifles, Confederate troops used a variety of firearms during the war, including old flintlocks in reserve units. Despite their ragtag appearance, southern soldiers were known for their quick and terrifying charges and distinctive ‘Rebel Yell’ that unnerved their opponents.
The Black Powder box contains 24 Warlord resin figures, including a command group, plastic bases, MDF Snake Fence scenery, cap badge decal sheet, and full-color flag sheets for both Union and Confederate troops. From the Napoleonic Wars to the American Revolution, Civil War, Plains Wars, and other conflicts, Black Powder encompasses nearly 300 years of musket and cannon warfare fueled by gunpowder.
In this tabletop combat game, players can reenact historical battles using troops, dice, and rules created by Warlord Games. Each brigade is led by a commander, and players can move their entire brigade at once or give individual units specific orders. Verbal commands are agreed upon by both players each turn, with movements determined by dice rolls.
Designed for large tabletops and multiplayer games, Black Powder was initially created as a club game. Players must have a measuring tape on hand for standard moves of 12 inches for infantry and 18 inches for cavalry. Building, painting, and playing with models adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the game itself.
